Consumers can find scamnesty boxes

More than 4 million, or one in eleven, British adults has responded to a scam and a third of those respondents went on to lampwork glaze necklace lose money, according to research for the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

The study – released today – marks the launch of the watchdog's Scams Awareness Month, for which it is placing "scamnesty" boxes in local libraries and other public areas, in which people can post suspicious correspondence with anonymity.

Consumers can find scamnesty boxes, and report suspect emails online, at consumerdirect.gov.uk/scamnesty. The site also features information on how to spot and avoid common scams (as does the Metropolitan Police's Fraud Alert site).

John Fingleton, chief executive of the
gemstone bracelet OFT, said that consumers were being targeted by email, text, letter and on social networking sites as thieves tried to trick them into handing over cash.

He added: “Scammers are using ever more sophisticated and cunning tactics to dupe people out of their cash. We want people to recognise the warning signs, and feel confident enough to seek advice from friends and family or from Consumer Direct.”

The OFT study found that around half of those who fell prey to scams lost more than £50, while 5 per cent lost more than £5,000. Almost three in four adults had been approached by scammers on email in the past year, while one in five had been approached by letter and one in ten by
discount turquoise jewelry text message.

Gillian Guy, chief executive of the charity Victim Support, said: "Scams can have a devastating impact on people's lives. Stigma or embarrassment can wrongly make victims think they are to blame, and discourage them from reporting these crimes or seeking help."

The OFT is asking people to remember the following tips:

- Stop, think and be sceptical. If something sounds too
wholesale shell jewelry good to be true it probably is.

- Do not be rushed into sending off money to someone you do not know, however plausible they might sound and even where an approach is personalised.

- Ask yourself how likely it is that you have been especially chosen for this offer - thousands of other people will probably have received the same offer.

- Think about how much money you could lose from
shell pearl bracelet replying to a potential scam - it's not a gamble worth taking.

- If you are unsure of an offer, speak to family or friends and seek advice from Consumer Direct before sending any money or giving out any banking or credit card details.
